Down Yonder (2/26/09)

Hey, y'all! Pull up a chair, grab yourself some fried chicken and coleslaw while I get the hot sauce and sweet tea. Then, we can enjoy these links gathered from down yonder.

Down on our knees
HT to JT for John Piper’s insightful comments. Is prayer dutiful legalism?
  • It’s a duty the way it’s the duty of a scuba diver to put on his air tank before he goes underwater.
  • It’s a duty the way pilots listen to air traffic controllers.
  • It’s a duty the way soldiers in combat clean their rifles and load their guns.
  • It’s a duty the way hungry people eat food.
  • It’s a duty the way thirsty people drink water.
  • It’s a duty the way a deaf man puts in his hearing aid.
  • It’s a duty the way a diabetic takes his insulin.
  • It’s a duty the way Pooh Bear looks for honey.
  • It’s a duty the way pirates look for gold.
Down in Years
Mark Driscoll reminds us of some famous young guns serving in ministry.

Down at the schoolyard: a life saved
This is an update on the story of 12-year-old Lia who delivered a speech on abortion at her school’s competition. She did so with the understanding that she would probably be disqualified. In fact, one judge walked out without hearing Lia’s speech, and the judges disqualified her.

Thankfully, they reversed their decision, announcing that she had won the competition and would be allowed to advance to the regional competition. Lia did not win the regional competition (which the family suspects was due to the controversy of the topic), but she received a bigger trophy than she expected. Her mom states that “somebody commented to us on our YouTube account that her aunt watched Lia's video and decided to NOT have an abortion because of it.

The mom also wanted to clear up one particular rumor. According to the story,
While the family espouses pro-life Christian values, "it's not like we're out every weekend picketing," she said. "It was just something really deep in her heart, and she just felt really passionate about it." She added: "I kind of snicker when I see people on the Youtube video [comment box] saying 'Oh, her mother forced her to do this' - I'm like, 'No, I'm on the other end, trying to make her pick another topic!'
Downright awesome
ArcAttack performs the theme to Doctor Who on Telsa coils. Sweet.
