Jesus’s Authority over Disease | Mark 1:29–32

“And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30  Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. 31  And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.” We’re tracking Jesus and His disciples on this long Sabbath day, and here we learn about Peter and Andrew’s home life.  This has been their dwelling since they followed Jesus north to Capernaum (cf. John 1:44).  Peter’s mother-in-law also lives with them, which means that Peter was married, and possibly also Andrew (cf. 1 Cor 9:5).  As an aside, a fifth-century church was constructed over the supposed residence of Peter, based on second-century graffiti, and excavations have uncovered a residence there.  She was bed-ridden, so it appears that the condition was serious.  Luke the physician notes that she had a “high fever” (Lk 4:38), so the...

Katie Souza and Selfish Repentance

Image
For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.  - 2 Corinthians 7:10 When we as chaplains find copies of Katie Souza's The Key to Your Expected End  floating around the jail, we kindly try to replace them with something better.  Anything.  And then we file them in our special file. Not an actual copy of Key, but a good idea. Why?  Perhaps the most damning aspect of this book is that, while it is aimed at inmates, it encourages a false, Word-Faith approach to their cases.  In short, Souza tells detainees to ignore legal counsel and simply believe God for victory. That's more than a minor issue, and it's more than a minor point in the book. For instance, chapter eight is called, "Just Say You're Sorry."  That's not a bad start, and Souza talks about the need to quit fooling around, admit one's crimes, and repent.  The problem starts to enter when she says that, when ...

What It Means to Do Greater Works Than Jesus

Image
John MacArthur on What It Means to Do Greater Works Than Jesus http://www.gty.org/Blog/B130813 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father" (John 14:12 ). Many charismatic teachers look to the above verse to validate their teaching. They see it as a proof text for the notion that present-day believers can perform miraculous signs and wonders—even more spectacular than Jesus Himself. Reinhard Bonnke, who claims to have raised the dead, is one prominent charismatic who subscribes to that view, and has even written a book offering his interpretation of what Jesus meant by "greater works." But Bonnke's view not only contradicts church history, it also defies Jesus' teaching in Scripture. In the following audio clip, John MacArthur explains the true, and far more profound, meaning of John 14:12 . One of the great tragedies of the cha...

What do you think about Joseph Prince?

Image
A growing sensation in Evangelical circles across the world, Joseph Prince captivates audiences with the message of God's grace.  According to his bio on his ministry website , Prince is a " highly sought-after conference speaker, Joseph has impacted church leaders internationally by preaching the unadulterated gospel of Jesus with boldness. " His success seems to begin with a biblical commitment that God seems to have honored. A founding member of New Creation Church, Joseph initially served as an elder and associate pastor. However, his unanimous appointment as senior pastor in 1990 marked a turning point in the history of the church, which started experiencing phenomenal growth. Under Joseph’s leadership, the church congregation has grown by more than a hundredfold—from about 150 to more...

Why is Word-Faith Teaching Dangerous?

Image
In this 2009 Wretched broadcast, Justin Peters ( JustinPeters.org/ )and Todd Friel discuss why you should avoid the teaching and promises of modern-day apostles and prophets.

RE: "Pastor Dayna Muldoon EXPOSED"

Image
It enough to make your heart ache.  "Pastor" Dayna Muldoon  has been pitching her tent in Florida, and like Todd Bentley before , false claims to miracles, healing, and prophecies litter her campsites. This video of a Calvary Chapel pastor exposing her as a false prophet has been appearing in various places, and its been uploaded to YouTube multiple times.  Even Todd Friel got animated about this , and nothing gets him hyper. Here's the deal: Muldoon set up her tent-meetings right down the road from Calvary Chapel St. Petersburg , peeking the interests of many attending the church.  When they listened to the message she presented, however, they found it not to be the Gospel, but instead the typical narcissistic message of health and blessings from God. This is coming from a Calvary Chapel crew, folks that are typically non-cessationists themselves.  Many churches, including this particular Calvary Chapel , host after-glow services where one ex...

Joel Osteen, Oprah, New Age, Word-Faith, Mormons and little gods, and the Trinity

Image
Nice title, huh?  Well, stick with me. Understand that I haven't been keeping up-to-date on all of my blog feeds, so imagine my surprise when I saw Joel Osteen welcoming " one of the great voices of our generation " and acknowledging how God is doing in her life... you know what I mean: Oprah was on . Now, Oprah and her network demonstrably teach a false gospel: This means Osteen's greeting is in stark contrast to Paul's sentiments in Galatians 1:6-8 or 2 Corinthians 10:5-6.  I'm not saying he was required to be rude, but he seemed to be praising her for her good works, did he not?  The Apostle John said, " If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works " (2 Jn 1:10-11). Of course, this is the same pastor who has twice said he can't tell ( or doesn't care about ) the difference between a Mormon and a Chr...
