What the Feeding of the 5,000 Reveals | Mark 6:35–44

35  And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. 36  Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” 37  But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” 38  And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” 39  Then he commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass. 40  So they sat down in groups, by hundreds and by fifties. 41  And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all. 42  And they all ate and were satisfied. 43  And they took up twelve baskets full of b...

God Thinks of Even Us | Psalm 8:3–4

3            When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,             the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4            what is man that you are mindful of him,             and the son of man that you care for him? The psalmist lived without light pollution from modern cities obscuring the majestic view of the heavens.  Even with telescopes floating in space, we’ve gained but a modicum of understanding as to its enormity.  All we can say is Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”  The stars above prod praise, fear, and awe within our hearts (33:6–9).  Other descriptions of creation include God speaking the universe into existence with the breath of His mouth (Gn 1; P...

Pre- and Post-Flood Longevity Chart

In case you ever wanted a graphical representation of the lengths of ages of the key persons in Genesis, here you go .  You should note that it uses Bishop Ussher's chronology and was originally published by Kent Hovind of Creation Science Evangelism (now called " Creation Today "), but it's still a nifty graph.

Is there a gap in Genesis 1:2?

Dr. Bill Barrick answers this question on his blog : [1] In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. [2] (The earth was formless and empty, and darkness was upon the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the water.) Some expositors propose that verse 2 represents a gap in the record of creation events. Normally, those who hold to the so-called “Gap Theory” interpret “formless and empty” as some form of chaotic result coming on the heels of God’s judgment of Satan. They suggest that the original creation was destroyed or terribly marred by God’s casting Satan out of Heaven and down to Earth. Many theologians use this “gap” to account for a very old earth, allowing millions, if not billions, of years to pass with Earth in this condition. Some even attempt to place all fossilization (of animals and man) within this gap—which creates a greater theological problem with having death (even of man) existing prior to the fall. A number of...

Don't forget the debate tonight

“Is creation a viable model of origins in today's modern scientific era?” Bill Nye argues the negative, Ken Ham argues the affirmative, and CNN’s Tom Foreman will be the debate moderator. The debate will stream live tonight at 7:00 PM EST, free of charge, at www.debatelive.org . More info on the debate is at the Answers website .

Of Fools and Monkey Business

Dubbed the "Scope's Monkey Trial," its story causes many to imagine repressive, Christian yokels standing against free speech and progress.  Perhaps you read about it or saw its story on Broadway or in the theater; perhaps it was not faithfully communicated to you. Joe Carter at T4G remembers the 88th anniversary of The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes by listing nine things you should know about the trial .  In short, his points are: Inherit the Wind was an anti-anti-Communist play. The trial was a publicity stunt. Scopes wasn't a martyr--he was a co-conspirator. Darrow wasn't the first choice. Bryan wasn't the lead prosecutor - and he knew the defendant. The prosecution's "Bible expert" believed in the day-age theory. Teaching evolution . . . and eugenics. The defense wanted to lose the case. The ruling was reversed, but no one wanted to retry the case.

An “Earthshaking” Discovery on Mars

Image
In case you didn't hear, the media was abuzz with the Mars rover's "earthshaking" discovery in December.  You may not have heard because the story fizzled shortly thereafter.  What happened?   Spike Parris , former US military space engineer, explained in his recent newsletter: An “Earthshaking” Discovery on Mars From the here-we-go-again department A NASA scientist recently announced a major, “earthshaking” discovery on Mars. According to an interview with John Grotzinger, the principal investigator for NASA’s current Mars rover mission, the rover had analyzed some Martian soil. And it had made an “earthshaking” discovery. Grotzinger even said “this data is [sic] gonna be one for the history books. It’s looking really good.”  James Garvin, chief scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said there were “unprecedented measurements of solid material samples with incredible implications about Mars ” (emphasis added). The media were a...

Bill Nye, Creationism is Highly Appropriate for our Children

Image
If you are teaching kids that God created the world, you're destroying our future, according to popular children's personality Bill Nye. Nye's entertaining persona as "The Science Guy" captivated a generation of young people, and continues to generate a love of science through tapes and syndication.  I use him, as do many other educators, and thank God for such persons who can teach complex ideas in engaging ways. Perhaps, though, I should thank blind chance instead. After all, a worldview that posits God as the universe's cause " is completely inconsistent with everything we have seen in the universe " and " there's no evidence for it, "  as Nye explained in the above YouTube rant.  Apparently, belief in science precludes belief in a Creator God. Please keep in mind that situations like this do not come down to the ignorance of Bill Nye to the indisputable evidences for design in creation.  It is not a matter of presenting N...

Creation Works Documentary: The Mt. Novarupta Eruption of 1912

I've added a new link under "Creationism" on the right nav-bar.   Creation Works have a nice documentary in the works that explores the impact of the 1912 Alaskan volcanic eruption.  Mt. Novarupta blew past Mount St. Helen's material output (pun intended), and, just like that latter eruption, it provides us with a microcosm the destructive ability of the global deluge in the book of Genesis.  Here's the trailer: T he catch?   They're looking for support , but you don't have to be a big spender to help - there's a $1 minimum pledge, and $10 can secure you a digital version of the documentary.  Their goal is only $5,500 by July 20.  Here's more detail on the documentary from their site: On June 6, 1912, the biggest eruption in over one hundred years occurred in what is now Katmai National Park, and The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes in Alaska. Ejecting over thirty times more material than Mount St. Helen’s, Novarupta exploded for more th...

Human and Dinosaur Footprints

Image
From the fossil footprint page of the Genesis Park . HT:  Andrew Gulick , who wrote on his Facebook page: A human footprint intruded by a tridactyl dinosaur (the human print was first and then the dinosaur stepped into the human print) ... an MRI was done on this that shows the compression areas that takes place during the process of walking Compression takes place when the heal hits the mud as well as the toes as the foot pushes off. the MRI showed compression marks for both for the dinosaur as well as the human print; thus, proving that this was not a fake casting of some prankster, but a real fossil print. A print proving that man and dinosaurs lived at the same time, just as the Bible says when it says that God made the beasts of the field on the same day he made man. ... the 6th day.

Vestigial Structures and "Junk" DNA

Image
While preparing a science lesson on animal physiology, this question came to my mind.  Naturalists use the existence of seemingly atrophied or near-useless organs and structures as evidence of physiological transition in an evolutionary timeline. For example, if you have a vermiform appendix hanging out in your body, not doing much, then it seems to follow that it did serve a purpose long ago that is no longer needed in this stage of human evolution.  I don't believe questions about why emus have wings or whether manatees once had legs are wrong to ask (is this not the purpose of science?), but I think they lead to better answers than evolution. Did someone say Answers ?  Here are some web articles on vestigial structures you might find interesting: Q & A Most recent Most popular Are there several organs in the human body that have no useful purpose? Are there “badly designed” parts of our body? Cutting out a useless vestigial a...

Understanding creation and K-12 homeschooling

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.   (Psalm 19:1 ESV) I had one of those moments that reminded me of the importance of a parent knowing what their child is learning.  Our fifth-grader is preparing to move into a unit on the atmosphere in her science curriculum, and, of course, Psalm 19:1 came to mind.  I explained that we are "thinking God's thoughts after Him" when we learn how the design of the world helps us to survive. As I was flipping through her notes in preparation, I noticed a page that starts, " So where did our atmosphere come from? "  I sighed.  " Evidence seems to suggest ..." is not a known or testable statement; it is a statement of faith just as much as believing God created it, with the exception that creationist evidence is censored in major scientific journals. It continued to say that " when the Earth first formed, it had little or no atmosphere at all ."  That is a l...

Tattoo Science

Here’s a guy rocking a tat sporting the art of a DNA strand, ammonite shell, and bacterial flagellar motor.  Tattooing is not exactly something that is popular within the wider Christian community or even something I would recommend for any reason; but I have to imagine that this an interesting site at the ID conference for the Metamorphosis video. Inside each and every organism reside biomechanical systems that Darwin and his contemporaries could never have imagined. Even today, much of what is happening inside cells is still not understood, and yet evolutionists hold fast to a belief that these remarkable constructs developed without God. These two contrasting views of the cell provide poignant illustration of how worldviews impact our interpretation of physical evidence. In his presentatio...
