Dubbed the "Scope's Monkey Trial," its story causes many to imagine repressive, Christian yokels standing against free speech and progress.  Perhaps you read about it or saw its story on Broadway or in the theater; perhaps it was not faithfully communicated to you. Joe Carter at T4G remembers the 88th anniversary of The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes by listing nine things you should know about the trial .  In short, his points are: Inherit the Wind was an anti-anti-Communist play. The trial was a publicity stunt. Scopes wasn't a martyr--he was a co-conspirator. Darrow wasn't the first choice. Bryan wasn't the lead prosecutor - and he knew the defendant. The prosecution's "Bible expert" believed in the day-age theory. Teaching evolution . . . and eugenics. The defense wanted to lose the case. The ruling was reversed, but no one wanted to retry the case.

Imagine with me: what does John Lennon of the Beatles have to do with your personal relationship with Christ?  This movie is for every Christian in America.

If you are teaching kids that God created the world, you're destroying our future, according to popular children's personality Bill Nye. Nye's entertaining persona as "The Science Guy" captivated a generation of young people, and continues to generate a love of science through tapes and syndication.  I use him, as do many other educators, and thank God for such persons who can teach complex ideas in engaging ways. Perhaps, though, I should thank blind chance instead. After all, a worldview that posits God as the universe's cause " is completely inconsistent with everything we have seen in the universe " and " there's no evidence for it, "  as Nye explained in the above YouTube rant.  Apparently, belief in science precludes belief in a Creator God. While preparing a science lesson on animal physiology, this question came to my mind.  Naturalists use the existence of seemingly atrophied or near-useless organs and structures as evidence of physiological transition in an evolutionary timeline. For example, if you have a vermiform appendix hanging out in your body, not doing much, then it seems to follow that it did serve a purpose long ago that is no longer needed in this stage of human evolution.  I don't believe questions about why emus have wings or whether manatees once had legs are wrong to ask (is this not the purpose of science?), but I think they lead to better answers than evolution. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.   (Psalm 19:1 ESV) I had one of those moments that reminded me of the importance of a parent knowing what their child is learning.  Our fifth-grader is preparing to move into a unit on the atmosphere in her science curriculum, and, of course, Psalm 19:1 came to mind.  I explained that we are "thinking God's thoughts after Him" when we learn how the design of the world helps us to survive. I adapted this back in 2007 from (then-called) Way of the Master Radio and from a Worldview class I took. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ T USED TO BE that animals did not clot when they were cut. So, any time one would walk by a bush and cut itself, it would bleed to death and die. This was serious. So, the animals got together and held a meeting as to the best course of action. A primitive canine suggested going to a vet in the event of a cut, but given that humans had not yet evolved, let alone invented medicine, this would not work. An ancient hamster suggested laying down on the cut, but this would not work for all cuts and besides, who wants to spend the rest of his life laying down on his side? Ken Ham warns of the growing intolerance of "the tolerant," those who believe that anyone who would believe something absolutely are absolutely wrong.  It is okay to embrace diversity, but it is wrong to tell folks that their beliefs are wrong. The good law prof of Washington Law School affirms that " there are limits to tolerance ." It's interesting. I don't know many who are threatened by opposing view points, but the language is becoming clearer that the real threat are Christians who evaluate the naturalistic worldview of the state system and conclude, " Not only is that not a sufficient explanation of the universe, I still believe the Bible to be the Word of God ." This is not just a concern for homeschool families.

I've been sitting on this for quite a while now because, well, I got busy.  Sorry!  But it's really interesting, really . One of the sites I have linked on the right side of this blog is the Discovery Institute, an organization that promotes theories in Intelligent Design ("ID").  Since ID has strong Christian and hence, special creationist connections (read, "believers in the six-day creation of Genesis 1"), it is often attacked as a sneaky group of Christians trying to get the Bible into the schools.  This is hardly the case since 1) to my knowledge, not all ID proponents are Christians, 2) ID certainly does not promote special creationism or any specific deity as the "designer," and 3) the only thing ID proponents want taught in schools is that Darwinism is not settled and remains an open question. It is along that third point that the Discovery Institute has hosted a petition of sorts called " A Scientific Dissent from Darwinism ...
