21  And he said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? 22  For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. 23  If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” One technology ubiquitous to the history of man is the lamp, for we always have need to shine a light in the darkness.  This brand of lamp would have consisted of a small clay container, some oil, and a wick—placed most effectively and safely on a shelf for the sake of the whole room.  Jesus teaches that His disciples are to also to shine the light of His truth to the world. God’s pattern is to reveal, even what we don’t want known.  At the right time, He shines His light on the secrets and intents of the heart (1 Cor 4:5).  While the “sins of some people are conspicuous,” God reveals other sins later (1 Tm 5:24).  Jesus says in Matthew 10:26–27 that “nothing is covered that will not ...

And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”  10  And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. 11  And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables, 12  so that ‘they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven.’  13  And he said to them, ‘Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?’ ” An unfortunate reality of this fallen world are physical ailments and handicaps, such as hearing loss.  It’s a result of the indwelling sin that touches every fiber of our being.  Our first parents smuggled it into our genome.  As a result, we naturally have ears to hear the words of Christ, but we’re born spiritually deaf, and just to be doubly-sure, some still place their hands over their ears. One can talk about faith in parachutes, but faith is knowing where one is, putting it on, and jumping from a falling aircraft.  Similarly, as He closes this parable, Jesus gives us three verbs to contemplate in relation to Scripture.  Only when all three describes you can you have hope of bearing fruit.
